Bridges Math has two different curriculum streams that support SIFE and Newcomers to become better mathematicians.

Foundational Math Unit for SIFE

The Foundational  Math Curriculum was developed as a CUNY stand-alone supplementary unit and focuses on building foundational skills that SIFE need to access mathematical content. This curriculum is focused on teaching students to connect mathematical content to their everyday lives and uses primarily a traditional mini-lesson structure followed by student collaborative work in heterogeneous small groups. This curriculum teaches basic numeracy skills using the four operations and includes problem solving strategies that allow students to develop success with word problems.  This is an especially good curriculum to start with SIFE who need additional support in learning basic mathematical skills and concepts. If students need lessons at this level, this curriculum is recommended for the beginning of the year. This curriculum additionally offers virtual materials for many of the lessons to support students who are learning virtually.

NYSED Bridges Math Curriculum for SIFE & Newcomers

The Bridges Math curriculum for SIFE and Newcomers began being piloted across New York State in 2022. This curriculum uses a Guided Math approach in which students are administered a pre-assessment to measure their current knowledge and skill level for the unit and then are assigned to teacher-led and independent student work centers based on their skill level. Students travel from center to center in homogenous groups based on their skill level. This curriculum also focuses on the language of mathematics so there is a strong emphasis on mathematical vocabulary and metacognitive awareness of mathematical problem solving and students’ strengths and weaknesses. The Bridges Math curriculum also includes social-emotional learning targets that are explained throughout the lesson plans. This curriculum additionally offers virtual materials for many of the lessons to support students who are learning virtually.
