The Academic and Emotional Resiliency of High School Students with Interrupted Formal Education: a Mixed-Methods Approach to Examining SIFE with Developing Literacy

This workshop showcased results of a mixed-methods investigation of different academic and non-cognitive factors that impacted growth in literacy of SIFE with Developing Literacy (SDL) across three schools in New York State. Researchers examined both reading data and qualitative interview and observation data to identify salient components in ensuring newcomer SDL success, which included collaborative learning, resiliency, and motivation. In the presentation, we shared a film of one of the implementing teachers in her classroom and some of the ways that utilizing some of the more promising strategies worked for her and her students.
