SPANISH HOME LANGUAGE ARTS (HLA)

Expanding Student’s Home Language & Literacy: Using Bridges Spanish HLA Program Tools and Best Practices

This course is designed for teachers who are implementing the Bridges-NYSED Spanish HLA program for SIFE & Entering Newcomers with up to a 6th grade level of literacy in home language. All cohort members eligible to participate in coaching office hours or consultations.

Course prerequisite: Orientation to Bridges Programs

CTLE: 8 CTLE hours are awarded upon successful completion of all four modules

All modules available via synchronous Zoom facilitation or asynchronous self-paced learning. 

Module 1 | Foundations of Bridges Spanish HLA Program Structure and Monitoring Tools for SIFE and Newcomers

  • Teachers will understand how the Bridges Spanish HLA program is structured.
  • Teachers will review Bridges Spanish HLA Writing Rubric to assess SIFE and Newcomers’ writing.
  • Teachers will understand why progress monitoring is important and how to do it for SIFE and Newcomers.

Module 2 | Backwards Planning for Expanding HLA Literacy Instruction: Connecting Vocabulary and Program Protocols

  • Teachers will use backwards planning design to determine which skills to teach, with a focus on vocabulary.
  • Teachers will review the purpose of instructional protocols and how they develop literacy.
  • Teachers will make connections between key curriculum protocols and developing language modalities.

All zoom sessions are from 12 pm – 2:30 pm.
