Bridges Math has two different curriculum streams that support SIFE and Newcomers to become better mathematicians.

SHELTERED MATH
for SIFE with Developing Literacy (SDL)

The Sheltered Math curriculum was developed during 2014-2016 and focuses on remediating foundational skills that SIFE with Developing Literacy may need to begin accessing mathematical content typical of a pre-algebra course. This curriculum is focused on teaching students to connect mathematical content to their everyday lives and uses primarily a traditional mini-lesson structure followed by student collaborative work in heterogeneous small groups. This curriculum teaches basic numeracy skills using the four mathematical operations and includes some work with decimals, fractions, and ratios and proportions. This is an especially good curriculum to start with for SIFE who need complete remediation of even basic mathematical skills and concepts. If students need lessons at this level, this curriculum is recommended for the beginning of the year.

GUIDED MATH
for SIFE and Newcomers Learning Pre-Algebra

The Guided Math curriculum is currently under development and was started during the 2020-2021 school year but will be completed with the first round by Spring of 2022. This curriculum uses a Guided Math approach in which students are administered a pre-assessment to measure their current knowledge and skill level for the unit and then are assigned to teacher-led and independent student work centers based on their skill level. Students travel from center to center in homogenous groups based on their skill level. This curriculum also focuses on the language of mathematics so there is a strong emphasis on mathematical vocabulary and metacognitive awareness of mathematical problem solving and students’ strengths and weaknesses. The Guided Math curriculum also includes social-emotional learning targets that are explained throughout the lesson plans. This curriculum additionally offers virtual materials for many of the lessons to support students who are learning virtually.
