STAND-ALONE ENL

Planning & Facilitating Centers-based Foundational Literacy Instruction for SIFE and Newcomers

This course is designed for teachers who are implementing the Bridges-NYSED Stand-alone ENL program for SIFE & Entering Newcomers with up to a 6th grade level of literacy in home language. All cohort members eligible to participate in coaching office hours or consultations.

Course prerequisite: Orientation to Bridges Programs

CTLE: 16 CTLE hours are awarded upon successful completion of all four modules

All modules available via synchronous Zoom facilitation or asynchronous self-paced learning. 

Module 1 | Getting Started with Literacy & Language Centers

  • Learn about the developmental literacy levels and leveled texts that organize Bridges Stand-alone ENL
  • Become familiar with the center’s design and teaching the centers’ protocol
  • Engage in small group learning activities with other teachers of SIFE.

Module 2 | Leveling Students & Progress Monitoring

  • Be guided through determining initial student reading levels using the IRLA
  • Organize small-group reading & writing instruction, set differentiated targets, and identify appropriate texts for centers practice
  • Review progress monitoring practices and materials

Module 3 | Intro to Group Reading & Writing

  • What does GRW look like in Stand-alone ENL?
  • How do teachers prepare GRW lessons?
  • How do teachers assess progress at GRW?

Module 4 | Group Reading & Writing Center: Focus on Writing

  • Observe small-group writing instruction
  • Review model writing lessons
  • Practice strategies for progress monitoring

INTEGRATED ELA/ENL

Teaching Academic Content through Thematic Units to SIFE and Entering Newcomers

This course is designed for teachers who are implementing the Bridges-NYSED Integrated ENL/ELA program for SIFE & Entering Newcomers with up to a 6th grade level of literacy in home language. All cohort members eligible to participate in coaching office hours or consultations.

Course prerequisite: Orientation to Bridges Programs

CTLE: 16 CTLE hours are awarded upon successful completion of all four modules

All modules available via synchronous Zoom facilitation or asynchronous self-paced learning. 

Module 1 | Progress Monitoring: “Begin with the End in Mind”

  • Learn the basics of implementation
  • Use the Bridges Writing Rubric to identify strengths and needs in student writing
  • Prepare a strong September Start, by identifying key content and targets in Unit 1

Module 2 | Teaching Unit 1: Identity & Connections

  • Participate in the key reading protocol for Unit 1 and learn how to apply it to your different contexts
  • Experience the instructional sequence for teaching writing in Unit 1

Module 3 | Teaching Unit 2: Power & Resources

  • Participate in key reading protocols for Unit 2 as students
  • Debrief and clarify these protocols as teachers
  • Explore resources for scaffolding writing paragraphs with textual evidence

Module 4 | Teaching Unit 3: Water & Impact

  • Determine and communicate cause & effect relationships
  • Extend student writing to multiple paragraphs on the same topic
