SPANISH HOME LANGUAGE ARTS (HLA)

Expanding Student’s Home Language & Literacy: Using Bridges Spanish HLA Program Tools and Best Practices

This course is designed for teachers who are implementing the Bridges-NYSED Spanish HLA program for SIFE & Entering Newcomers with up to a 6th grade level of literacy in home language. All cohort members eligible to participate in coaching office hours or consultations.

Course prerequisite: Orientation to Bridges Programs

CTLE: 8 CTLE hours are awarded upon successful completion of all four modules

All modules available via synchronous Zoom facilitation or asynchronous self-paced learning. 

Module 1 | Foundations of Bridges Spanish HLA Program Structure and Monitoring Tools for SIFE and Newcomers

  • Review the different forms of assessment present int he Bridges HLA curriculum, with a particular emphasis on writing 
  • Practice scoring student samples, analyzing students’ strengths and needs, and offering targeted feedback for next steps
  • View modeled progress monitoring tools throughout the session

Module 2 | Backwards Planning for Expanding HLA Literacy Instruction: Connecting Vocabulary and Program Protocols

  • Explore connections between the language modalities of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • Identify how these modalities interact to build home language literacy in a HLA classroom
  • Review different academic protocols present in the Bridges HLA curriculum that support and expand students’ home language literacy
